Inspired by James May’s Toy Stories

Posted by Toytown

Watching James May’s Toy Stories I’ve found myself becoming quite nostalgic for the ‘good old days’ before the age of computer games.

Coming from the same generation as Mr May I too have a fondness for Meccano, Scalextric and Lego. These were the toys that fostered my interest in Engineering and construction ultimately leading to my career as an Engineer. Now if I’d grown up sat in front of a computer screen wiggling the joystick on a games console, shooting adversaries with a variety of murderous weapons, I wonder what career I would have followed.

If you too have fond memories of your childhood playing with Scalextric you might be interested to hear about a competition currently running at Modelzone where you can win
a Scalextric Street Car Race Set
. All you have to do is visit the Modelzone blog and answer one simple question:

In what year did Brooklands Race Track, in Weybridge, Surrey, finally close - 1939, 1949 or 1959?

Drop them an email with your name and address to be in with a chance of winning. Entries must be in by November 29th. - BTW - The answer is 1939 (I think)

A while back we posted a really great video featuring a well thought out and built Scalextric track, well, we have found another.

Again really well put together will all the accessories you could need, race barriers, vantage points, film crew, stadiums and crowd, sponsorship, lighting, buildings and foliage!

They have even added some nifty sound effects to really bring the circuit to life!

The Worlds Longest Scalextric Track

Posted by ToyBoy

Slot racing is high on the list of many a man’s toy wish list. Any excuse to purchase a new Scalextric set is a great opportunity – the birth of a son, nephew, or even just a sneaky purchase to treat yourself!

The following video has to be as close to slot car heaven as you can get, showing a Scalextric track which holds the current world record for the longest ever constructed track.

Awesome as that is, it is still just a track laid out on some tarmac. It has some crazily long straights which offer the perfect chance to tear along, but it doesn’t have depth, or character. The following video shows the real deal, a track featuring all the best Scalextric accessories, with a perfect set up – tire walls, bridges, grand stand and even raised track, all put together to create the ideal circuit:
